Squarespace gets blamed for a lot of things that are not its fault.
Most Squarespace sites underperform for the same reason: someone picked a template they liked the look of and then poured their business into whatever shape it happened to be. The template made the decisions. Which page comes first, what the homepage leads with, where the enquiry actually happens, how someone moves from curious to in touch. All of it inherited from a demo site built for a fictional business in Portland.
The platform is genuinely good. Better than its reputation among people who have not used it properly. It handles hosting, security, mobile, SSL and updates without you thinking about any of it, which is exactly what a business owner should want.
What it will not do is work out what your site needs to say or what order it needs to say it in. That is the job, and it is the same job it was when I was doing it for Peter Alexander and Portmans at Premier Retail Group, just with a smaller budget and better software.

Working with a Circle member
I am a member of Squarespace Circle, the platform's programme for designers who build client sites. It is free to join and it means two practical things for you.
Your first year is 20 percent cheaper. I apply a Circle discount code at checkout on any annual plan. That comes straight off your bill, not mine.
You do not pay Squarespace while I build. A standard Squarespace trial runs fourteen days. Circle members can extend a client trial to six months. So your site sits on a trial while we work, and your subscription only starts when you are ready to go live. Most people do not know this is possible and end up paying for four months of hosting on a site nobody can see.
Circle also means platform updates land in front of me before they land in your dashboard, which matters more than it sounds when Squarespace changes something mid-project.

1. Fit check, 15 minutes, free You tell me what you need. I tell you whether a build or a tune-up is the right answer, and whether Squarespace is even the right platform. Sometimes it is not, and I will say so.
2. Brief and quote Pages, scope, who writes what. Fixed price, fixed scope, clear timeline.
3. Design and build Homepage designed first for sign-off, then the rest built out. Your site sits on an extended trial the whole time, so you are not paying for it yet.
4. Launch and handover Tested across devices, SEO configured, then a recorded training session. Thirty days of questions included, because things always come up in week three.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For a professionally designed Squarespace site, the Australian market runs roughly $3,000 to $10,000 depending on page count and whether copy is included. Below about $2,000 you are generally buying a template setup rather than a design. My builds are $5,600. That is separate from what Squarespace itself charges you.

Plans are billed annually and run from a basic personal plan up to advanced commerce, roughly a few hundred to around eight hundred dollars a year in AUD depending on which you need. Hosting, security, SSL and updates are all included, so there is nothing else to arrange. As a Circle member I can take 20 percent off your first year.

Squarespace if you want to run your own site without a developer. Everything is included and maintained, and nothing breaks because a plugin updated overnight. WordPress if you need genuinely custom functionality, or if you already have a developer who maintains it. WordPress is more powerful and considerably more work to own. Most small businesses choose it for flexibility they never end up using.

Shopify if selling products online is the main job of your site. It handles inventory, variants, shipping and tax in ways Squarespace does not, and the checkout is better. Squarespace for service businesses, portfolios, and businesses selling a small range alongside their main offer. I build both, so I have no reason to push you either way.

Both work. Squarespace has better typography, cleaner templates and a more coherent editor. Wix is more flexible and less opinionated, which some people like and some people find turns into a mess. I build on Squarespace because the sites age better and clients find them easier to maintain a year later.

Yes, with a caveat. The technical foundations are solid out of the box: clean code, automatic sitemap, mobile responsive, SSL, decent page speed. It also generates structured data for your business automatically from your settings. The caveat is that it will not do your SEO for you. Page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, alt text and actual content still have to be written, and most Squarespace sites underperform because nobody did that part.

Yes, and that is the point. Every build includes a training session, recorded so you can go back to it. If you would rather not, the support plans exist for exactly that.

7.1 is the current version. If your site is on 7.0 you are on an older system that is no longer being developed, and the editor is meaningfully more limited. Moving is not automatic, it is a rebuild. Worth doing if you were due for a refresh anyway, and less urgent if your 7.0 site is working.

Often, yes. If you are on 7.1 and the structure is sound, a redesign is usually less work than a rebuild. If you are on 7.0, or the structure is the problem, starting fresh is generally faster and cheaper than fighting what is there. The fit check sorts out which.

Four to five weeks for a full build, from the point I have your content. Content is what causes delays almost every time, so we agree a date for it in the brief.

Constantly. I am based in Bathurst NSW and work with clients across Central West NSW including Orange, Mudgee, Lithgow, Blayney, Oberon and Cowra, and Australia-wide from Perth to Brisbane. Builds run entirely over email and video calls.
