Designing a Self-Discovery Book That Feels as Alive as Its Content
The brief
YONI: An Experimental Guide is a book about self-discovery, personal power, and the sacred messiness of figuring yourself out. It's vulnerable, bold, and deliberately unconventional — and it needed a book design to match.
The author came to me knowing that a standard, safe layout would completely undermine the work. This book wasn't a self-help manual with numbered steps and clean white margins. It was an experience. The design needed to honour that without tipping into chaos.
The challenge
Experimental content is genuinely hard to design for. Too much visual noise and the reader loses the thread. Too clean and the energy of the writing flatlines on the page. The layouts needed to invite curiosity and support deep reflection — giving the content room to breathe while keeping the reader anchored in the journey.
There was also the cover to consider. The cover needed to communicate quiet strength and creative spirit to someone browsing a shelf or a screen, without spelling everything out. A book this personal needed a cover that felt like a door, not a billboard.
What we created
Artistic, open page layouts that embrace pause, play, and personal interpretation — designed to guide the reader through layers of thought rather than push them through information. Spread compositions that create rhythm across the reading experience, with intentional white space that lets the words land properly.
Cover concepts that captured the essence of the book: grounded, powerful, and just a little bit wild.
The result
A book design that feels as intentional and alive as the writing inside it. Every page is an invitation — to sit with an idea, reflect on a question, or simply breathe before turning to the next thing. YONI reads like a book that was designed by someone who actually understood what it was about.
